I'm currently staying at place that has a central WiFi access point at the main building, and my room is the furthest. I can get reasonable signal on my laptop, but my phone—which has a weaker antenna—cannot reliably sustain a connection.
My solution is to use the Internet Sharing feature in macOS to use my laptop as a bridge between the WiFi and my phone.
- Connect your phone to your laptop using a lightning USB cable
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Center
- Turn off WiFi and the mobile data network
- Open System Preferences in the Apple menu.
- Click Sharing
- Check Internet Sharing
- Check iPhone USB
